What is Twitter?

Twitter is one of a growing collection of Web2.0 services that have appeared on the internet over the last few years, appearing first as a prototype in March 2006 and launching as a company in May 2007. The service allows users to send a 140-character message, or “tweet”, to anyone who has chosen and been allowed to subscribe to receive it.

Although Twitter started as a primarily browser based application the flexible API that forms part of it has allowed developers to build all manner of ways of accessing and receiving tweets.
